HOST CITY

Gqeberha

The host city for the 31st Congress of the SNSA is the charming port city of Gqeberha (previously known as Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape.

The SNSA seeks to advance education and training throughout all regions of South Africa, to improve the quality of scientific knowledge and

pursuit of high standards of excellence in patient care, clinical practice and related sciences among professionals in the field of neurosurgery.

Selected as the venue to ensure that the SNSA fulfils the objective of inclusivity and reducing inequities in surgical education nationally, the

Friendly City looks forward to welcoming neurosurgeons from around the country, and expert speakers from around the globe, to share research, ideas, innovation and education in a geographical region that is often overlooked and typically underserved.

About Gqeberha

Gqeberha was founded in 1820 by Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin, who named the town after his late wife Elizabeth. The city has also been known as Port Elizabeth or shortened to PE.

PE is a major seaport and the most populous city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is the seat of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa's second-smallest metropolitan municipality by area.

It is the sixth-most populous city in South Africa and is the cultural, economic and financial hub of the Eastern Cape.

Gqeberha, also known as "The Friendly City" or "The Windy City", is the new name for Port Elizabeth, South Africa's second-largest city by land area.

In 2019, the Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee recommended the name change after the Xhosa and Southern Khoe name for the Baakens River that runs through the city. The name change was officially gazetted on February 23, 2021.

Gqeberha is located on the south eastern coast of South Africa, 770 km east of Cape Town, and faces the Indian Ocean.

It's known for its warm oceanic climate, blue-flag beaches, and rich cultural heritage.

The city is also a gateway to the Eastern Cape's outdoor and big five game safari tourism
